Sanjaya Malakar, the long haired teenager on American Idol has finally been voted off the show.  Malakar, who shined in the earlier rounds of the competition - and who was admittedly, one of my favorites in the beginning, became one of the worst singers in the shows history.  Yet, he somehow managed to create a fan base that kept him on the show longer than other contestants with better singing abilities.
Malakar's continued presence on the show angered many and casted doubt on the show's credibility in recent weeks.  Judges Randy, Paula and Simon - who routinely provide feedback to contestants after their performances, couldn't even comment on Malakar's performances because they were just SO bad.  It was embarrassing to watch, yet Malakar seemed generally unphased by it.
American Idol has become one of the most popular shows in US history.  While it's a singing competition, it has also become somewhat of a popularity contest where the contestant's look and personality have become just as much a part of the equation as their singing.  It remains to be seen whether or not the show's popularity will continue.  The contestants that remain on the show are Blake, LaKisha, Melinda, Jordan, Phil and Chris - all of whom can actually sing.
