Move over wrestling fans, the IFL is here and is drawing in more fans than a hot day in Texas. The International Fighting League is the world’s first team-based professional mixed martial arts league. Unlike professional wrestling where the matches are staged and well, a little cheesy (ok, a LOT cheesy), the IFL is real sports entertainment.
According to the IFL’s website, competitions are decided with a best of five series between two teams of five fighters each using a blend of boxing, kickboxing, submission grappling and wrestling (collectively known as mixed martial arts). Matches are generally three, five minute rounds that can be decided by submission or a three panel judges’ decision.
These fighters are tough - with a capital T. Matches are basically no holds barred and it’s common for the ring floor to be covered in blood. Ok, mentioning the blood may make it sound a bit too tough, but it really isn’t. Competitors of past tough men competitions such as Ken Shamrock and Tito Ortiz not only act as team captains, but they also occasionally get in the ring.
I guarantee that anyone who enjoys boxing, wrestling or martial arts will be on the edge of their seats with every match. I know I always am. Commentator Joe Rogan, from Fear Factor fame, is surprisingly good in his role. I don’t know if his background is in martial arts, but Rogan knows his stuff and makes the show even more entertaining. The IFL is on the Spike TV on Monday nights.
